2013-02-27 New Direction in Lewisham launches Foundations of Recovery
New Direction, an integrated drug and alcohol treatment service in Lewisham launched Foundations of Recovery throughout its treatment system at an event on 5th February 2013.
The launch was celebrated with an open day that was attended by more than 100 people from across Lewisham’s recovery community. The event was an opportunity for New Direction and other stakeholders such as Job Centre Plus, Work Programmes, mutual aid groups, residential services and other local providers to demonstrate how the recovery agenda is being driven forward in Lewisham. Over 40 signatures were obtained from people who are committed to driving the recovery agenda forward in Lewisham by developing Recovery Community Forum’s that will be coordinated by local service user groups.
New Direction has rolled out Foundations of Recovery as a structured treatment system in drug and alcohol service across the borough of Lewisham. Running the earlier recovery services are centred at its main hub at 410 Lewisham High Street with the later recovery services based from a variety of locations across Lewisham. In addition to this these, services are also delivered from community sites - alcohol services (three sites), stimulant services (four sites) and eight GP shared care services, thus ensuring services are accessible across the borough.
With the aim of providing high quality and effective interventions to help people recover from their problems caused by drug and alcohol use, New Direction was particularly proud to use the Open Day to demonstrate its recent work with employment, training and education providers as well as Job Centre Plus where New Direction have developed satellite services. New Direction is also working with the Charity Learning Consortia to provide over 65 distance learning computer skills training packages for its service users. Open Book, a charity that works with those with offending behaviour and substance misuse problems continues to provide avenues for people to return to education.
Jonathan Williams, service manager at CRI said “The Foundations of Recovery model pulls together services at New Direction in a coordinated way which will enable it to fully engage with the local recovery agenda in Lewisham. This will provide vital support to people in the community who may be struggling with drug and alcohol issues. We are proud that we are able to work alongside partner agencies that have supported this Open Day to provide tailored treatment to individuals to enable them to get their lives back on track and play a positive role in the community.”
