Alcohol Intervention Service (AIS), HMP Wormwood Scrubs

Who we are

The AIS team at HMP Wormwood Scrubs works with offenders whose substance use is associated with their offending. The programme we run is part of the Prisoners Addressing Substance Related Offending (P-ASRO) which is for users of any kind of substance who are in custody and whose substance use means that they are more likely to commit crime.<

What we do

Our aim is to reduce offending behaviour by tackling drug use of offenders. The programme we run is suitable for prisoners who have a substance use problem related to their offending.
The five week programme consists of 20 group sessions split into four modules:

  • enhancing motivation to change
  • self awareness
  • relapse prevention
  • lifestyle change
  • Next steps

The programme is available to all offenders whose drug misuse includes a mix of alcohol and other drugs. Referrals to the programme are made by the Counselling, Advice, Referral, Assessment and Throughcare (CARAT) team at Wormwood Scrubs.

Prisoners must have four months to serve; need to be able to read and write and must be willing to work in a group setting.
