We also work with the families, partners, parents and carers of people with substance misuse issues, and support the victims of domestic abuse and abuse related to drugs and alcohol. We help young people improve their relationships with family, friends and neighbours and encourage them to participate in education, employment and training opportunities.
We also provide information, advice, advocacy and support to help young people obtain and maintain tenancies.

Working with Parents
CRI works with the parents of children who are at risk of involvement in crime, anti social behaviour or social exclusion. Some parents attend support programmes voluntarily and others attend as part of a parenting order imposed by the courts. The parenting support programme aims to keep families together by improving parenting skills and building parents' confidence and self-esteem. The service also helps to reduce the likelihood of children being placed on anti social behaviour orders due to their being out of parental control, and of families being evicted from their accommodation due to anti social behaviour.
CRI’s services offer a combination of practical, personal and therapeutic support tailored to meet individual or family needs.
CRI and the Safer Hastings Partnership recently received £93,000 from the Home Office Respect Taskforce to work with local families persistently perpetrating anti-social behaviour and who are at risk of losing their homes or of other significant enforcement action.
Working with Families
CRI’s PATCHED project in Brighton & Hove offer advice, support and referral to the families, partners, parents and carers of substance misusers and the wider community affected by substance misuse. The PATCHED project is peer-led and supports families to deal with the impact of the substance misuse problems of a family member. Workers help families to protect siblings and to get better treatment for drug problems. This family support can be highly effective in helping people to deal with substance misuse issues and can significantly aid their rehabilitation and recovery.
Education and Advice Services
PULSE
A Healthy Living Centre Initiative offering health related services to young people aged 16-25 living in the Hastings and St Leonard's area. The PULSE Partnership is made up of around 15-20 service providers working together to provide information, advice and support around sexual health, substance misuse, mental health, general health promotion and smoking cessation. Themed surgeries are held around Hastings and St Leonards, including those held on the PULSE mobile bus.
Springboard to Education and Employment
Springboard to Education and Employment is a group of pan-Sussex projects managed by Connexions Sussex, designed to encourage and assist young people aged 13-17 who are not in education, employment or training to gain access to opportunities. CRI delivers an intensive outreach support service to young people across East Sussex with the aim of enabling them to return to education or enter employment or training.
Connexions Personal Advisors
CRI provides a range of projects for young people to help them improve their relationships with family, friends and neighbours and develop their full potential as young adults. These projects actively engage with young people in the community and encourage them to participate in education, employment and training opportunities, working in partnership with agencies like Connexions, colleges of further education and benefits agencies. Service users include hard to reach young people, such as those excluded from school, those living in rural areas, young carers, those with mental or physical health problems, and those who have left school with no opportunity for further education or employment.
Accommodation Services for Young People
CRI runs a range of accommodation support services for young people and has undertaken detailed research into the factors affecting their homelessness. CRI provides information, advice, advocacy and support to young people aged between 16 and 25 years who are homeless, potentially homeless, inappropriately housed or who have accommodation but need support to sustain it. Young people are helped with securing and maintaining accommodation and the service works closely with a range of housing providers, voluntary and statutory agencies to give clients access to a full range of services.
By helping young people to develop the skills for independent living and supporting them to maintain their accommodation, CRI has helped to reduce eviction rates amongst young tenants and to improve the relationships between young people and their neighbours.
The service in Hastings and Rother has been awarded a Legal Aid Board quality mark for the excellent level of service provided. Similar quality processes are employed throughout CRI range of services to young people.
Substance Misuse Services for Young People
CRI works with partners in criminal justice and health services to provide individually tailored, specialist community support for young people with serious and complex substance misuse problems. The aim of these services is to help young people move on from a specialist substance misuse service into mainstream youth provision in education, training and employment. Project workers try to divert young people from involvement with drugs and to stop them becoming involved in criminal activity to buy drugs.
Domestic Abuse Services
The Hastings & Rother Domestic Abuse Service provides information, support and practical help to women, men and children who are living with domestic abuse issues. This includes advice on safety and child protection as well as practical advice on housing and legal issues. CRI helps individuals make informed choices through discussing their needs with an informed person who understands the nature of abuse and power and who can provide unbiased support. CRI also encourages the reporting of abuse to protect victims and reduce repeat offending.
Individual projects provide specialist support for those where abuse is linked to substance or alcohol misuse and for those who are pregnant or have young children. CRI's projects are run in close partnership with the police, children's support services and community safety officers as well as other organisations that can provide help and support. There is also a specialist support service for vulnerable adults, including elderly people, those with learning disabilities, mental health or other issues, which may prevent them from accessing the service independently.
The CRI Hastings & Rother Domestic Abuse Service has received a number of Home Office awards for effectiveness.
