On Thursday 19 June, a number of speakers from CRI will attend the Drugs and Alcohol Today Conference and Exhibition to help develop a wider awareness of the substance misuse sector.
Speakers include CRI’s Michael Lawrence (Novel & Psychoactive Substance(NPS)Development Lead), Tom Brennan (Assertive Outreach Worker), Gary Smith (LGBT Brief Intervention worker) and Vicky McFarlane (Volunteer and Mentor Coordinator).
We’d like to welcome anyone involved in drug and alcohol services including managers, primary care workers, trainer/education providers, public health officials and social workers along to come and join us. Visitors will benefit from a CPD certified conference programme featuring essential updates, briefings and an opportunity to discuss national policy and strategy developments with key players, the seminar programme will also explore the impact of national policy on local frontline practice and vice versa.

On Sunday 28 July we’ll be celebrating World Hepatitis Day with a picnic and we’ll be attempting a World Record for the most people miming the actions to see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil – one of the themes of this year’s campaign.

Service users in Islington have organised a Recovery Convention to celebrate their recovery journeys with peers, service staff, friends and families.
The afternoon event will include face painting, refreshments, a barbecue, alternative therapies and information stalls as well as a variety of workshops offering introductions to photography and drama to public health and Islington Council’s Families First.
From 6pm there will be a Prom Ball – dress up or come as you are – with music, dancing and a general celebration of recovery.
The event will be opened by Eileen McMullan, senior joint commissioner and closed by Councillor Janet Burgess.
It’s a free event and everyone is welcome.

A day dedicated to raising awareness about the range of peer support available to individuals in recovery and their families and friends in, and around, Maidstone.
Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and Cocaine Anonymous, Aspire2be Maidstone (formerly MASS) and local carer and family groups will all be involved on the day.
Taster sessions will run throughout the day for those wanting to experience a peer support group and a market place will have information about the support available in the area.

A balloon launch will end the day with messages tagged to the balloons before release.

The Caerphilly & Blaenau Gwent Young Persons’ Service celebrates its 1st birthday and a new name – DAYS, short for drug and alcohol youth support. Commissioners, colleagues and young people are all invited to share success stories and mark the anniversary.

CRI’s next London-based council-led service user involvement conference is being held on Tuesday 27th March from 11am until 4pm at:

The day will be fully interactive with a recovery focus and will entail a choice of four workshops as well as guest speakers Stephen Bamber, Outside Edge Theatre company; Steve King and Mark Gilman (those of you who attended the staff conference may remember Mark).
The service user council will be speaking about the history of the council, achievements to date and its vision for the future. There will also be a recruitment stand for potential council members and for the first time, Recovery Awards for service users nominated to mark their achievements in this regard.
Travel expenses for service users can be reimbursed on the day or at project level in advance if helpful to ensure attendance.
Lunch will be provided.

This conference will explore the recovery model, how it works and whether it can deliver results to cure addictions. A CRI recovery expert will take part in the panel debate Can Treatment do Recovery? with Phil Valentine from CCAR, Mark Gilman from NTA, Simon Morton from the NHS and Carl Cundall from SASS.
The first national conference was an opportunity for those working in substance misuse to share good and innovative practice and demonstrate the steps being taken towards delivering a recovery orientated workforce. Peter Sheath, clinical services co-ordinator for CRI in the North and Midlands presented a session at the conference, film and PowerPoint presentations available here.
