New Haringey support group launched

2012-02-13 Event

Family Inclusion Worker at Haringey Drug Interventions Programme, Karen Wright launches new support group for carers, families and friends of people affected by addiction. The first event takes place this Saturday 18th February from 12pm to 2pm at The Raphael Centre, St Michaels Church in Wood Green near Haringey, North London with the hope for many more to follow.

Due to the lack of family-focused resources in Haringey, there is a genuine need for practical and emotional support for significant others experiencing the negative impact addiction places on day-to-day living. Two guest speakers will be talking about their experiences of caring for people with addictions.

Whilst visiting families' homes, Karen Wright has direct contact with people suffering from and affected by addiction. From working day-to-day on addiction cases, she maintains that 'families (in other words carers) receiving support in their own right can be instrumental in the recovery process of the person that they are concerned about. It is very important that they receive help in being able to achieve this i.e finding ways to cope, how to say no to money demands, caring for themselves more, attending workshops like Chrysalis that provide free drug awareness training and so on'.

One of Karen's clients in receipt of Family Inclusion support says ' I found the support extremely beneficial and helpful, enabling me to deal with my situation more calmly, gain some much needed insights and to deal with my son more effectively' proving that support can work positively to help cure people's addictions.

If you are affected by addiction and would like to attend this support group, please get in touch with Family Drugs/Alcohol Inclusion Worker Karen Wright on 020 8885 6195
