Two CRI services in East Lancashire, Burnley Inspire and Nelson Inspire, hosted events to mark Overdose Awareness Day on the 31st August.

Overdose Awareness Day aims to commemorate the lives of those who have passed away because of drug overdose and raise awareness of overdose prevention.

At the Mission Centre in Nelson over 10 service users decorated a tree of remembrance with the names of people who had lost their lives from overdosing. This was followed by a training session on how to react in overdose situations and how to administer Naloxone; the medicine that reverses opioid overdose. All service users participating in the event were given a take–home Naloxone kit.

At the Burnley service, silver balloons were released to commemorate those who had died and commemorative silver ribbons made by staff, volunteers, peer mentors and service users were worn throughout the event. A display in the service’s reception provided information around Naloxone, overdose risk, prevention and the recovery position.

Wendy Harker, Governance Partnership & Recovery Manager at CRI Inspire said: “With the number of national deaths relating to overdose increasing every day it is now more important than ever to raise awareness of preventative measures. We are proud to have had so many people get involved this year to raise awareness and remember those lives that have been lost.”

Gail Robinson, Inspire’s Lead Health & Wellbeing nurse for East Lancashire
