Prescription drugs

A prescription drug requires a prescription from a doctor in order to be supplied legally in the UK.

These drugs are regulated under the Medicines Act 1968, which controls their manufacture, supply, sale and use.

Possession of a prescription drug is not an offence if you have been legally prescribed the drug. However, it is a criminal offence to possess or supply a prescription drug without an authorised prescription.

This guide provides information about prescription drugs that are sometimes misused for non-medical reasons, including their use, effects and risks and their legal status.
