Dr Tim Millar, Senior Research Fellow, Institute of Brain, Behaviour & Mental Health, University of Manchester
Tim has worked in addiction epidemiology for 25 years, with a particular recent focus on the linkage of secondary datasets as a platform for research. He leads the NIQUAD MRC Addiction Research Cluster, which is addressing key
questions about addiction harm and the effect of interventions in ameliorating harm.
Professor Oscar D’Agnone, MD MRCPsych, Medical Director of CRI, University of Manchester
Oscar has more than 25 years’ national and international experience as a clinician specialising in addictions. He is Honorary Professor of the Faculty of Medical and Human Science, Institute of Brain, Behaviour, and Mental Health at the University of Manchester and has written two books, on Cocaine Addiction and Prevention Strategies respectively. He has supported the development of CRI’s clinical services across England and Wales and is working to enhance CRI’s integrated models of care for the treatment of addictions, mental and other general health problems.
Update on Novel Psychoactive Substances
Professor Schifano will discuss the clinical, pharmacological and toxicity challenges posed by a range of Novel Psychoactive Substances, and also comment on the clinical issues relating to the misuse of prescription drugs.
Professor Fabrizio Schifano, CRI Hertfordshire, University of Hertfordshire
Chair of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the University of Hertfordshire and a member of the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, Fabrizio is one of the few physicians in Europe with training and specialist qualifications in both psychiatry and clinical pharmacology. He has made outstanding contributions to several areas including mortality studies, stimulant synthetic drugs and the internet and has published around 150 research and review papers.

Dr Nady el-Guebaly, University of Calgary
Dr. el-Guebaly is Professor, Head and past Chair, Division of Addiction Department of Psychiatry at the University of Calgary. He is the Founding Past Medical Director of the Calgary Health Region’s Addiction Program and Founding Past President of the International Society of Addiction Medicine. Currently, he is the Research Director of the Alberta Gambling Research Institute; Chief Examiner of the International Society of Addiction Medicine; Editor-in-Chief, Canadian Journal of Addiction and Textbook of Addiction Treatment: International Perspectives.

Kate Davies OBE, Head of Public Health, Armed Forces Health and Offender Health
Kate is Head of 3 of the 5 areas of Direct Commissioning working in the national support team in NHS England alongside the 4 Regions and 27 Area Teams commissioning healthcare services across England for Immunisation and Screening, the universal health of 0-5 year olds, Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs), healthcare for serving armed forces personnel and their families, healthcare services in all prisons, Secure Children’s Homes and Training Centres, Immigration Removal Centre, Healthcare and Police Custody suites and the development of the national Liaison & Diversion Programme. This National role is to assure quality, consistent and sustained services with a strong focus on Health Inequalities and outcomes for patients and their families across England.
Diversion, misuse and trafficking of methadone and buprenorphine – impact on recovery
Professor Alho will examine the challenges and the impact of diversion and misuse of opioid substitute medications and the strategies to reduce the diversion.
Professor Hannu Alho, ISAM, University of Helsinki
Prof Alho is the President of ISAM, a professor at the University of Helsinki, a research Professor at National Institute for Health and Welfare and an addiction specialist at the University Hospital, Helsinki, Finland. He is also a past president of the Finnish Society of Addiction Medicine. His area of research includes developing new pharmacotherapies in the field of addiction especially related to alcohol and gambling dependence.

Paul Griffiths, Scientific Director, EMCDDA, Lisbon
Paul Griffiths is the Scientific Coordinator at the EMCDDA. In this role, he is responsible for monitoring epidemiological aspects of the European drug situation. Paul has worked for over 25 years the drugs area. His previous employment has included the UNODC and the National Addiction Centre, London.

Dr Iain Smith, Consultant Addiction Psychiatrist and Honorary Clinical Lecturer, University of Glasgow
Dr Smith has specialised in the field of addiction psychiatry for approaching 20 years and is closely involved with training on alcohol related topics and interventions for all health care professionals. He is a member of the Scottish Health Action on Alcohol Problems (SHAAP), this is government funded and has an important role in combating the rising tide of alcohol-related harm.

Addiction Consultant Psychiatrist; Sociologist; Member of the Addictions Faculty Executive; Financial Officer of the London Division Executive (Royal College of Psychiatrists); Member of ACMD. Past Lead Governor of the CNWL NHS Foundation Trust. Involved in international addiction training and service developments (Kenya; Zambia). Ongoing PhD research on Health Services Configuration. Occasionally a hopeless romantic (an Arsenal fan!), he enjoys listening to music, watching films and debating – true to being a Greek he occasionally lets other people speak too!
Dr Gordon Morse, FRCGP, Medical Director Turning Point, UK
Dr Morse’s past appointments include being a single handed GP principal, Medical Consultant, and Clinical Lead for Drug and Alcohol services. He has been closely involved with the RCGP Substance Misuse Training Unit since 1995 and co-wrote some of its course materials. He has published numerous articles and served on the NTA’s National Expert Advisory Group on Recovery Orientated Drug Treatment in 2013. His real sphere of expertise is fly fishing.
